Broadside
This project asks you to consider type as both image and information. You will explore one typeface in-depth and create a broadside specimen sheet for that face. The purpose of this broadside is to show and tell the viewer everything they need to know about your typeface. Your broadside should convey the details and overall personality of the typeface in a clear, interesting and beautiful design.
Assignment
Select a typeface from our textbooks that you are interested in. Carefully examine the typeface. What are its distinguishing features? An unusually long tail on the uppercase R? A quirky Q? An elaborate ampersand? Sharply angled bracketing? A one- or two-story a? Does ascender height exceed cap height?
Research the typeface. Who created it? When? Where? Why? Did it have a specific application? If you can, find photo documentation or an actual example of its popular use. Compile no more than 150 words about your typeface.
Using only typography, design an A2 broadside that demonstrates your typeface’s range of capabilities. Display the typeface 6 ways: as letterform, as text, as title, as display, as detail, and as image.
You may use two colors: black and one accent color. You must work in InDesign for this project. A grid as a basis for your composition is recommended.
